Growing Oyster Mushrooms

Oyster mushrooms are beginner friendly and easy to grow and come in a variety of species and colours. Mushroom in general are highly nutritional, Oysters in particular have the highest protein per weight of all mushrooms. High in fibre, low calories and almost fat free.

Cooked fresh or from dried, (for dried, rehydrate in water for 20 minutes then drain well before cooking) oyster mushrooms can compliment many dishes from soups, casseroles, pasta and rice dishes and provides a nutrient rich addition or focal point for range of meals.

 

  • Just drill holes in a fresh, hardwood log, soak in water for 24hours then plug the dowels in the holes. 

  • Make sure your log doesn’t dry out and allow nature to take its course.

  • Once fully inoculated, your oyster logs may produce fruit biannually up to 3 times a year autumn, winter and spring, (in response to heavy rainfall) for as long as 10 years.

  • Best results are achieved with larger diameter logs with 25 x plugs in a 50cm length of timber. Any hardwood is suitable including; cherry, birch, alder, chestnut, oak and willow to name a few.
