Growing Sunflowers

Sunflower seeds are rich in a variety of nutrients and minerals, which help aid in supporting a healthy nervous system. They also contain trace minerals, which act as an antioxidant. Sunflowers are not only good for you, but also your garden.

 

In addition to attracting a variety of insects and pollinators, its strong root system when left to die, breaks down adding organic matter to the soil while increasing its ability to hold water. It has also been said that another big advantage to having sunflowers in your garden, is that it removes toxins from the soil. Sunflowers are said to remove heavy metals, chemical fertiliser and other unwanted toxin, perfect for an organic gardener.

​Growing Sunflowers

  1. Put some damp soil in a plastic pot almost to the top

  2. Make a hole with your finger, drop in your sunflower seed and cover with compost.

  3. Place your pot on a sunny windowsill

  4. Your seed should begin to germinate in around 1 or 2 weeks

  5. When your plants grow too big for the pot, plant them in bigger flowerpots or directly into the soil.

  6. Sunflowers can withstand a certain amount of drought but grow best when watered through hot periods.

  7. Your plant should begin to flower in around 8 week

  8. Allow the flower head to die and dry, then harvest the seeds.
