Educational Lesson Options

Option 1 - Regenerative Farming Principles: Students will learn and discuss the benefits of regenerative farming through exploring the methods we use on site. Discuss ways to avoid chemical fertiliser and pesticides, ways to create natural pesticides such as companion plants, how we add nutrients to our soil, and how we can work with nature to grow better food and leave a positive imprint on our environment. Students will be shown how we make our own compost and fertilizer and also how we make our ‘no dig’ veg beds to easily make one at home.

Option 2 - Growing Food Basics: In this session students will learn methods of sowing and growing a selection of salad and vegetables that we grow on site. They will get hands-on with experience with seeds sowing and learn the steps from sowing to harvest and even flowering and seed saving. Students will be able to taste our seasonal produce while discussing the different growing seasons. Students will sow their own seeds to take with them and begin growing their own food from home.

Option 3 - Renewable Energy & Waste Management:  As an off-grid site, we try to utilise as much of our natural resources and renewable energy as possible. Students will discuss the benefits of solar and wind energy, thermal energy and also learn about the importance of water collection through exploring different methods for collecting rainwater. Students will learn what happens to our waste and discuss ideas of minimising or recycling our rubbish and unwanted items.   Through exploring new perspectives, students will take away the knowledge to make more conscious and informed choices towards our energy use and wastage.

Option 4 - Natural Building Methods:  Learn and discuss natural building methods old and new and how they compare to traditional building methods. Participants will have the opportunity to get practical experience through creating an adobe/cob (mud) wall and discuss a variety of methods used in building natural structures. Visitors will also be encouraged to work as a team to create practical applications such as recycled planters or willow fencing.

Option 5Biodiversity:  Biodiversity is an important concept when it comes to maintaining a balanced environment. Students will discuss the benefits of biodiversity and ways of creating biodiversity on a small or large scale.  Through observation of our wildlife pond and exploration of our wild areas, students will learn about ways in which they can help restore our environment.  We will also discuss the many other ways we are trying to increase biodiversity at The Green Backyard and how it is benefitting our environment.

Option 6 - Outdoor Cooking:  Students will learn how to harvest, prepare, cook and serve a selection of fresh produce from our market garden. We will discuss combinations of food, nutrition, seasonal crops and cooking methods to expand their knowledge and palates while encouraging the benefits of a healthy diet.

What we hope you will gain from your visit

  • We offer a range of experiences, designed to develop learner’s social skills, confidence and self-esteem, whilst giving them an understanding and appreciation of our natural surroundings.

  • We aim to inspire our visitors and followers to learn through play, exploration, active learning, creativity and critical thinking. Through these learning methods, visitors will develop a variety of life skills such as; communication and language development, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics and creative development.

  • We can provide pre-arranged, bespoke educational group sessions suited to the group’s needs and learning interests. Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and discover the importance and benefits of sustainability through organic growing, natural building and creative up-cycling/recycling projects.

  • Groups will be encouraged to open up their senses and have the chance to see, touch, smell and taste our wide variety of organic produce while they learn methods and techniques to easily grow food of their own.

  • Group trips can be arranged and incorporated within workshops and optional activities built in to coincide with the current curriculum in a range of subjects.  Environmental education can be applied to geography, literacy, mathematics and design technology, whilst observing and discovering the principles of nature through all aspects of science.

  • Catch, identify and observe freshwater animals from our wildlife pond, discovering the benefits of organic growing on a human and environmental level, and learn techniques of building and creating with recycled and natural materials. Individuals will also learn how this in turn benefits nature and the environment around us, discussing methods of how we can make small and easy changes and take action to benefit the wildlife we cohabit with, and how in return they benefit us.

  • Students from all years can learn the benefits of being outside and get hands-on experience with growing vegetables and flowers from seed. Learning to transplant seedlings and maintain and nurture the plants through to harvest takes a certain amount of rewarding responsibility. We can provide pre-arranged sessions with lesson plans based around each group’s individual needs. Students will receive both the materials and knowledge to begin growing their own food at home. Whilst learning how to grow, we will also provide basic information on the health and nutritional benefits of vegetables and can include cookery/preparation classes to demonstrate ways to eat or cook the produce, where applicable.

About Project Abundance

Project Abundance aims to establish an eco friendly market garden and educational space aimed to provide, teach, and demonstrate concepts of sustainable living.   We aim to combine experimental & research-based projects, alongside methods tried and tested throughout generations around the world, and more recent eco projects. We believe that it is a necessity to teach, demonstrate and preserve methods of conservation and sustainability such as no till and small-scale farming. This is due to some of the negative effects that current farming methods have on our environment such as destroying habitat for wildlife and depleting our land of vital nutrients, which effectively hinders our ability to grow healthy organic natural food. This is just one amongst many aspects of conservation and sustainability that shows why such a project is so important to our future as a population - not just locally but globally.

We acknowledge that the younger generations are our future, and are vital to overcoming our global issues on a long-term basis. Project Abundance aims to provide on-site education workshops based around a variety of subjects surrounding sustainability and wellness. We also aspire to provide workshops within schools, colleges and other educational centres to encourage the creating of vegetable plots on school grounds - resulting in a huge variety of benefits.  Not only will a school vegetable plot provide organic healthy food for its students, but also reinforce the knowledge and confidence to apply such methods to their own lives, whilst simultaneously, promoting and strengthening valuable life skills such as; patience, time management, compassion, mindfulness, creativity, communication and responsibility.
