Growing Sorrel

Sorrel has a distinct sour flavour that adds some zest to salads by adding a few young leaves or steaming larger leaves as an alternative to spinach. In addition to it culinary uses, it also contains medicinal properties.

  • Sow sorrel seeds in spring. Fill pots with good quality seed compost, thinly sow a few seeds, cover with a shallow layer of compost then water.

 

  • Sorrel seeds may take up to 6 weeks to germinate.

 

  • When large enough to handle, individually pot or transplant seedling in a well-drained, sunny position.

 

  • De-head flowers to prolong the plant going to seed, foliage will die off late autumn.

  • Sorrel will be ready for harvest 60 days after sowing.

Sorrel is used medicinally for reducing sudden and on-going inflammation of the nasal passages and respiratory tract, for treating bacterial infections along with conventional medicine and increasing urine flow.  Caution should be taken to ingesting larger quantities as it may increase the risk of developing kidney stones.
